Apple has started manufacturing its top of the line iPhone 11 at the Foxconn plant near Chennai. Notably, this is the first time that a Flagship iPhone is being assembled in India. Minister Piyush Goyal (Commerce and Industry) announced this news on his Twitter account.
India has become an important market for all smartphone manufacturers, India has nearly 50 crore smartphone users. Smartphone manufacturing giants like Samsung and Xiaomi have already invested lots of resources in India to cope up with the growing smartphone demand in India.
Apple has been planning to ramp up its production in India for years, but the company had to face lots of problems to find contract manufacturers that can provide Apple's safety and quality standards.
Since local assembly of the iPhone 11 would help the company to avoid tax that is needed to pay for importing from its global manufacturing plants. Earlier this month, Foxconn, which is one of the leading suppliers for Apple has planned to invest $1 billion to expand its India factory. Pegatron the second-largest iPhone assembler after Foxconn was also speculated to invest in India and also planed a local subsidiary in the coming future.
iPhone SE 2020 is also set to be manufactured in India at the Wistron plant near Bangalore. In the past, Apple assembled its older iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 7 models in its Bangalore plant and currently assembles iPhone XR units in India.
