Google introduced the Photos app nearly five years ago, and it remained unchanged for the most part. But, things are changing now, and Google has revamped its Google photos app and has introduced some new features to the app. Let's find out in detail about Google's latest updates to its photos app in this post.
The first and most prominent visual change is the newer Google Photos logo. The new Google Photos logo is much simplified, subtle, and has rounded corners when compared to the older edgy pinwheel logo. Google says that they have retained the pinwheel concept to remind us of our childhood nostalgia.
The new Photos logo is designed by keeping simplicity in mind, but the logo seems to be too simple for my taste, and I still prefer the older one.
Simplicity is the core of this latest update, and Google has carried out it to the user interface as well. Google has introduced a three tabbed structure for the Photos app.
The first tab here is the Photos, which contains your photos and videos. Google has increased the size of the thumbnail and reduced the white spaces in between the images. Google has also thrown in an auto-playing video feature in their latest update. Next, you will find the Search tab in the center, where you can quickly access your preferred places, people, and things important to you. And finally, you have the Library tab, which contains your Albums, Favorites, Trash, Archive, and more.
The next update is entirely new as well as the most requested feature by the users, since the inception of Google Photos. Google finally introduced the map view in the Photos app. Now users can pinch and zoom around the globe to explore photos of their travels and places they have visited.
If users enable location from their device camera, Location History, or manually add locations, those photos are automatically organized and searchable by place in Google Photos.
Google introduced the Memories feature last year, and they have updated it with some new features to make it even more appealing for the users. Google added more types of Memories, like the best pics of you and your closest friends and family over the years, trips, and even just the highlights from last week.
Google has also moved its automatic creations like collages, movies, stylized photos, animations, and others from the “For you” (removed) tab to Memories. Now, users can also control the memories they are receiving.
Google's updated Photos experience will reach Android and iOS users starting next week.
