Smartphones have become an integral part of our daily life. Recently the Indian government has revised the Goods and Services tax for smartphones from 12% to 18% with effect from April 1, 2020. This move of the Indian government had made all the major smartphone makers revise their pricing in India. India is one of the most price-sensitive markets in the world, and this increase in smartphone prices can affect the purchase decision of a large number of people. In this post, we have listed the increase in price by some of the popular brands in India.
Xiaomi, India's largest selling smartphone brand, has increased its smartphone pricing of Mi and Redmi devices by up to Rs.2000. Poco has also increased the pricing of their popular Poco X2 by Rs. 1000.
Realme is another smartphone brand that usually prices their smartphones aggressively in India. Due to the GST hike, Realme also increased its smartphone pricing across its entire portfolio. Now Realme smartphones will see an increase in the price tag of up to Rs.2000.
South Korean smartphone giant Samsung also increased its smartphone prices in India by a significant margin. Samsung has increased the pricing of their galaxy line up by up to Rs.5000.
Premium smartphone maker Apple has also revised its smartphone pricing in India by a significant amount. Apple has increased the pricing of their iPhones by up to Rs.7600.
Oppo and Vivo have also revised their smartphone prices in India by a premium of up to Rs.2000.
In addition to the above-listed brands, other smartphone manufacturers may also increase the pricing of their products once the lockdown is officially lifted. Xiaomi India CE0 Mr. Manu Kumar Jain in his official tweet requested the government to reconsider the GST hike of smartphones at least under Rs.15,000.
In addition to this GST hike, the recent coronavirus lockdown can also play a significant role in affecting the smartphone industry in India.
